Basset Hound
Basset Hounds are friendly, laid-back scent hounds originally bred to track game. They’re known for their sweet temperament, strong noses, and stubborn streak. Bassets can be wonderful family dogs, but they do best with patient, consistent training that works with their instincts—especially around sniffing, recall, and leash manners.
Most Bassets are affectionate, social, and easygoing at home. They often prefer sniffing over speed and can be very food-motivated. Many are independent thinkers and may ignore cues when their nose is engaged. They can also be vocal (bay/howl) and thrive on routine.
Common challenges include pulling on leash to sniff, selective recall, counter-surfing/food stealing, and house-training inconsistency. Some Bassets become noisy when bored or when left alone. Weight management is important because extra weight can worsen mobility issues.
Bassets need daily movement, but focus on low-impact exercise. Aim for 45–75 minutes per day split into sessions, plus enrichment. Sniff walks are ideal. Add short training games and food puzzles to satisfy their brain.
Keep routines predictable: scheduled potty breaks, calm greetings, and a daily place routine. Manage food access (counters, trash) and use enrichment to prevent boredom. Teach calm alone-time skills.

Teach loose-leash walking by rewarding slack leash and stopping when pulling happens. Use structured ‘sniff breaks’ as a reward so your dog learns that calm walking earns sniffing.
Recall & Long-Line Safety
Build recall with long-line practice and high-value rewards. Don’t rely on off-leash recall early—scent hounds may choose the smell. Practice daily and reward heavily for coming back.
House Training & Routine
Use a consistent potty schedule, reward immediately after success, and supervise closely. Crate training and confinement help prevent accidents. Increase freedom gradually.
Food Manners & Counter-Surfing
Manage the environment: keep food out of reach and use gates if needed. Teach leave it and impulse control. Reward calm behavior around food and practice trading games.
Baying/Howling & Settling
Teach a place routine and reward quiet behavior. Provide enrichment and avoid reinforcing vocal demand behaviors. Practice calm alone time with chews or food puzzles.
