Havanese
Havanese are affectionate, social companion dogs known for their cheerful personalities and strong bond with their people. They’re typically friendly and adaptable, but because they’re so people-oriented, they benefit from training that builds independence, calm routines, and polite manners. With consistent guidance, Havanese make wonderful family dogs and great ‘everyday life’ companions.
Most Havanese are playful, cuddly, and eager to be included. They often enjoy learning tricks and can be surprisingly smart. Many are sensitive and do best with gentle, consistent training. They can be vocal and may develop ‘velcro dog’ habits if independence isn’t taught.
Common challenges include separation anxiety tendencies, barking/alerting, house-training inconsistency, and overexcitement during greetings. Some become reactive from fear if socialization is limited. Grooming tolerance can also be a challenge without cooperative care training.
Havanese need daily movement and enrichment, but not extreme exercise. Aim for 30–60 minutes per day split into shorter sessions, plus mental games. Sniff walks, short training sessions, and play with rules work well.
Keep routines predictable: scheduled potty breaks, calm greetings, and daily place/quiet-time practice. Use crate training or a safe rest area to build independence. Manage barking triggers and reward calm behavior.
Get help if your dog panics when left alone, barking escalates, or house training isn’t improving. Early support can prevent small-dog anxiety patterns from becoming entrenched.
Havanese respond best to upbeat, reward-based training with clear routines. Keep sessions short, reinforce calmness, and teach independence skills early so your dog can relax without constant attention.

Practice short separations daily, even when you’re home. Use crate/pen time with enrichment and reward calm behavior. Avoid constant carrying or always being together—teach your dog that alone time is safe.
House Training & Consistency
Use a predictable potty schedule, reward immediately after success, and supervise closely. Small dogs benefit from frequent breaks and gradual freedom. Track patterns and stay consistent.
Barking & Alerting
Teach a place routine and reward quiet behavior. Manage triggers like windows/doors and practice calm exposure to noises. Teach ‘quiet’ by reinforcing silence after a brief alert.
Polite Greetings & Handling
Teach sit for attention and calm greetings. Practice gentle handling daily—paws, face, brushing—paired with rewards. This prevents grooming and vet visits from becoming stressful.
Socialization & Confidence
Expose your Havanese to people, dogs, and environments in a calm, controlled way. Reward neutrality and confidence. Avoid overwhelming greetings—confidence comes from successful experiences.
